But when Mitsuko checks her father’s data, she learns that the Gemini Circuit is flawed: if it cannot be repaired, Jiro must be destroyed. Jiro flees, but finds himself battling the insect-like mecha sent by the evil Dr. Gill. The basic story is familiar, but it’s presented with more feeling than most mecha tales. New York City, 1931. Movie producer Jack Maloney has just completed a labor of love: his documentary on the life of the great inventor Thomas Alva Edison. Jack wants his wife, actress Kate Cruthers, to take a look. What results is an engaging, Emmy Award-winning family drama about the 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration required to build an impassioned life. As Jack’s “documentary” clicks along, we learn that he met Edison (played with great sincerity by Kenneth Welsh) while fleeing from St. Patrick’s Orphanage in 1893. Chased by truancy officers, the then-12-year-old boy (actor Michael Suchanek) ran smack into Edison’s New Jersey lab, winning Edison’s affections and landing a long-term apprentice job. Believable conversations between mentor and student about education, life, and the invention of Edison’s light bulb and phonograph are dotted with many recognizable, timely quotations.

As the film follows their 35-year relationship, viewers see how Edison dedicated his life to “the betterment of mankind” and sacrificed time with his family as a result. The unspoken father-son bond between the two men–stronger than Edison’s relationship with his own wife and children–comes to a head as the adult Jack (Jesse Collins) challenges Edison’s tenacity. Reconciliation and a deeper empathy for each other’s choices caps off this nicely paced, beautifully filmed and scored presentation. A well-spent hour for families with children over 6 years old or for elementary school students studying American inventors. –Liane Thomas

This is about as unconventional and controversial as an opera video can get. Opinions on it range from wildly enthusiastic to uncompromisingly negative, with little in between. I find it extraordinarily powerful and (once some mental adjustments are made) theatrically convincing. Maria Stuarda, an opera by Donizetti based on a play by Schiller, exists in two rather different editions–from 1834 and 1835. Both are represented musically in parts of this production, with considerable rewriting by Bonynge (as was done in Donizetti’s time) to show off the spectacular voices of Sutherland and Tourangeau. As if that was not complicated enough, this 1988 production, a joint project of Czech and German television, uses the 1975 Decca recording for its music, with Czech performers doing skilled lip synchronization. In nonmusical connecting passages, they synchronize to Schiller’s original German script. For full enjoyment, you have to expand the usual “suspension of disbelief” to cover frequnt shifts between spoken German and sung Italian, in which you never hear the actual voices of the people you see on the screen.

Not a promising description, but it works like a charm. The Czech actors, the German speaking voices, and the recorded singers are all first-class and Petr Weigl has blended their efforts with dazzling skill. Most hard-core opera fans, who have already accepted the concept of two British qUns singing at one another in Italian, should be able to handle the whole package. The story (of the condemnation and execution of Mary, QUn of Scots, by her rival, QUn Elizabeth I) is a powerful one, and both Schiller and Donizetti have exploited it for all its worth. The central scene–a face-to-face confrontation between Mary and Elizabeth–never actually happened, but it makes crackling drama, and in this production it has enormous impact. –Joe McLellan

Watch VH1 Storytellers - The Doors Online Right Now!

The surviving members of the Doors did a savvy thing with this hourlong session of VH-1 Storytellers, first broadcast in early 2001. Knowing that they could never replace their late and legendary frontman, Jim Morrison, the Doors (Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger, and John Densmore) invited vocalists from a variety of hot bands to offer their own interpretations of eight classic Doors hits. The spectre of Morrison looms over the entire set, reminding us that the charismatic, leather-clad Lizard King could never, ever be matched in terms of vocal style, depth, and heart-rending soul. It’s best, then, to let these admiring young rockers enjoy this opportunity to pay reverent homage, and they do it with considerable skill. Above it all, the remaining Doors form a solid trio, still lighting fire to songs they’ve performed thousands of times.

Patrick Monahan (from Train) kicks off with a sharp rendition of “Love Me Two Times,” and the Cult’s Ian Astbury tries (almost successfully) to bring a medley of “Whiskey Bar/Backdoor Man” up to Morrison’s level. The highlight comes from Days of the New’s Travis Meeks, whose performance of “The End” is fresh, impassioned, and altogether triumphant. Nearly as good is Stone Temple Pilots’ Scott Weiland (clearly a Morrison worshipper), who burns through “Break On Through” and “Five to One” with adequate fervor. Creed’s Scott Stapp closes with “Light My Fire” (proving that the original is still untouchable) and a rafter-rattling “Roadhouse Blus.” Each performance is noteworthy, and die-hard Doors fans shouldn’t miss this latter-day celebration. Younger listeners who are less aware of Morrison’s legacy are best served, in the long run; they get the best of both worlds, old and new. –Jeff Shannon

See Cradle 2 The Grave/Romeo Must Die Online Right Now!

The intriguing cross-pollination of rap and kung-fu continus with Cradle 2 the Grave, co-starring high-profile rapper DMX and Hong Kong superstar Jet Li. Master thief Fait (DMX) hits a diamond exhange but comes away with a bag of black gems of mysterious origin. When a crime kingpin steals the gems from Fait, an international arms dealer kidnaps Fait’s beloved daughter–and Fait can only get her back with the help of Su (Li), a Taiwanese intelligence agent tracking the gems himself. A summary of the plot doesn’t do Cradle 2 the Grave justice; while the basic story elements suggest a dozen generic action flicks, the cast (including Anthony Anderson, Gabrielle Union, and Kelly Hu) has genuine charisma and the movie layers action on top of action to strong effect. All in all, a much more engaging thrill ride than you’d expect. –Bret Fetzer

Cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak, the cameraman behind Speed, Lethal Weapon 4, and The Devil’s Advocate, makes his directorial debut with a lively but by-the-numbers film that mixes Hong Kong action pyrotechnics with gritty urban gang drama. Jet Li stars as a jailed cop named Han who hightails it to Oakland, California, to seek revenge for the gang-related murder of his brother. What he finds, though, is a fierce war between his father’s syndicate and that of Isaak O’Day (Delroy Lindo) for control of the city’s precious waterfront land, as both groups are trying to make a deal with a corrupt football-team owner to build a new stadium. The political shenanigans are basically just a backdrop for the kick-ass action, and to give Li a number of enemies to lock limbs with. It also provides him with a love interest, Trish (hip-hop star Aaliyah), who’s O’Day’s daughter and like Han, the only straight arrow in a family of crooked mobsters. Li and Aaliyah have a teasing, gentle chemistry, and when they’re onscreen together, the movie lights up and glides along smoothly. Li even finds a way to work Aaliyah into one of his action set pieces, using her arms and legs to fight a female adversary because “I can’t hit a girl!” However, when these two aren’t onscreen (and that’s a fair amount of the time) the movie plods along, despite a stately turn by Lindo and Isaiah Washington and Russell Wong as two family allies who may not be as loyal as they seem. Li’s action, though, is still phenomenal as ever, from his prison breakout (as he takes out a platoon of guards–strung upside down by one leg) to a knockdown-dragout fight with the agile and dangerously sexy Wong. And despite the Romeo and Juliet overtones, this is one mighty chaste romance, albeit one with a happy ending for the star-crossed lovers. –Mark Englehart
